The Alchemy of Dyeing is a workshop and research platform co-founded by friend and fashion designer Mehru Khan and me that dives into the alchemy of colour making, urban foraging, textile dyeing, chromophobia, taste making and other complexities around organic dyeing. As our practices started to evolve during 2020 given the circumstances, we found an alignment in the way we were exploring colour making and dye making.
An instant, impulsive decision thanks to BNU’s Summer Programme propelled us into creating an 8 week course, record educational videos and deep dive into teaching the knowledge we had acquired.
The workshops combine theory, discussions, one-on-one crits, demonstrations, field trips and assignments. As a result, participants familiarise themselves with the history of selected colours, colour extraction techniques, fabric selections, logbook making and finally move into creating a final piece and unpacking its relevance within the region and trend forecasting.
We’ve seen ourselves as both teachers and learners, and see this as an opportunity to cross pollinate, collaborate, and contribute to each other’s practices’ but also the practices of others. Our teaching approach is fluid, discursive and generative- responding to sites around us and what is locally available.
